DYI Diaper Cream (non-toxic and safe for your baby!)

This babies diaper cream is a simple way to keep your little one safe by making the product at home with 5 simple ingredients! This is a DYI you definitely want to make!

I started making this DYI diaper cream for my son when he was a newborn and haven’t looked back since. It works wonderfully, keeps his little bottom so smooth and he has never gotten a rash!

It’s so hard to keep chemicals away from ourselves and little ones these days, and since our skin is the largest organ on our body, it absorbs anything and everything you put on it. This is especially true for babies, whose little systems are not quite as efficient at removing toxins from their little bodies, and therefore it is even more important to avoid chemicals at all costs!

AND to the best part is once you buy our ingredients, the overall price is much cheaper than any of the natural store bought creams you buy. Creams can cost up to $20 for a small tube or container!

This recipe is rather simple to make, providing you with 3 jars of diaper cream- I use one for his room, one for the main floor and the little one is for his diaper bag! If you are busy and would prefer to make this as infrequent as possible, then double the recipe and keep the remaining jars of diaper cream in the fridge for storing.

The Ingredients for DYI non-toxic diaper cream

We only need 5 simple wholesome ingredients!

  • SHEA BUTTER: Shea butter is an excellent moisturizer that not only helps get rid of dryness but also prevents further moisture loss and repairs the skin’s natural moisture barrier due to the presence of vitamin E and different beneficial fatty acids. Be sure to buy PURE shea butter with no additives to ensure it is free of any harmful chemicals or substances, to keep is safe to use for babies’ skin. THIS IS MY FAVORITE SHEA BUTTER TO USE
  • COCONUT OIL: Coconut oil is antibacterial, so it prevents the stool from irritating the skin. If diaper rash does occur, coconut oil’s anti-inflammatory properties soothes the rash and irritation. I buy my coconut oil at Costco, and be sure to always use unrefined and organic if possible
  • OLIVE OR AVOCADO OIL: Either will work well and I usually just use what I have on hand. Sometimes I am out of avocado oil and use Olive instead, and vice versa.
  • BEESWAX: When added to skincare products, this protective barrier can prevent exposure to bacteria in the stool and from the wetness of their pee. But the most amazing virtue of beeswax is its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Beeswax also has antifungal properties which come in handy in fighting fungal outgrowth. This is my favorite 100% natural white beeswax from Amsom
  • ZINC OXIDE: What is the purpose of zinc oxide in diaper cream? Zinc oxide topical cream is used to treat and prevent diaper rash. It is also used to protect skin from being irritated and wet caused by diapers. IT is important to use pharmaceutical grade NON-NANO zinc oxide.

HOW TO MAKE DYI DIAPER CREAM

To make this diaper cream, you will need the following tools:

A double boiler or mason jar. The double boiler is simply a pot with a little bit of water and a glass bowl sitting on top. The water will boil underneath the glass bowl and the hot bowl will melt the ingredients inside. If you don’t have a bowl that fits on top of one of your pots, them use a large mason jar, add in your ingredients and place the mason jar inside your pot of boiling water. Be sure not to get any water in your bowl or jar though.

A hand held mixer or immersion blender to whip up the cream

Jars for storing. I sterilize jars I have on hand or wipe them down with rubbing alcohol before use.

It’s just easy to make! Melt all the ingredients together, and once combined remove it from the heat and let sit for 30 minutes. Then refrigerate for another 30 minutes. Once hardened (due to the beeswax) you will use your handheld mixer to whip up the cream to create a nice fluffy smooth texture!
